A wonderful range of gluten-free grains for all your needs: small packs with a 10% case discount or larger sacks. Organic or natural - the choice is yours.
In the West there is a tendency simply to equate wheat with grain. However, most grains are in fact naturally gluten-free.
In order to have 'gluten-free' on the label, grains must be tested, producing a result of less than 20ppm (parts per million) of gluten. Some of the grains we sell at Naturally Good Food are naturally gluten-free, but have not been tested, so don't carry a 'gluten-free' label. In addition, they may have been packed in a place that handles gluten-containing foods. Please ask us if you are not sure.
At Naturally Good Food we stock numerous gluten-free grains, including:
This section contains information on lines in our gluten-free grains category. If you are looking for gluten-free flours, click here, as not all gluten-free flours are grain-based. Amaranth, buckwheat and quinoa are included in this section, although they are not 'true' cereals, but pseudocereals.
Amaranth - cultivated by the Aztecs 8,000 years ago, and still a staple crop in Peru, the history of amaranth can be traced to Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. Amaranth grains are an excellent source of protein, as well as dietary fibre and minerals such as magnesium, iron, calcium and phosphorus.
Buckwheat - despite its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat, as it is not a grass. Instead, buckwheat is derived from the same family as sorrel, knotweed and rhubarb. Because its seeds are eaten, it is referred to as a pseudocereal. Buckwheat has a high fibre content and is a staple product across Eastern Europe. Buckwheat noodles are widely eaten in Asia, and are great as an alternative to wheat-based noodles and pasta.
Millet - for information on millet, click here.
Teff - teff is possibly the smallest grain in the world. Its name is said to derive from the Ethiopian word 'á1-ff', meaning 'lost'.
